I found a picture of my "ugly freckle!"

I found a picture of my melanoma that I feel is worth sharing; this picture was taken within days of my melanoma being "discovered!"  If you're interested in knowing HOW it was detected, please read my blog post titled, The day we found out!

Early detection greatly improves one's chances of surviving melanoma!  The longer you wait to have a mole examined, the greater the chance a potential melanoma may become metastatic and spread to other, more distant parts of the body.

Short answer to the question, what is the PURPOSE of life?

May the following be an encouragement to you to live your life with purpose for the glory of God who is so worthy of a life lived for Him because of the salvation given us through Jesus Christ. With blessings and prayers, Karen

About Rick Warren, author. You will enjoy the new insights that Rick Warren has, with his wife now having cancer and him having "wealth" from the book sales.

This is an absolutely incredible short interview with Rick Warren, author of "The Purpose Driven Life" and pastor of Saddleback Church in California. In the interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, Rick said:

People ask me, what is the purpose of life? And I respond: In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven. One day my heart is going to stop, and that will be the end of my body-- but not the end of me. I may live 60 to 100 years on earth, but I am going to spend trillions of years in eternity. This is the warm-up act - the dress rehearsal.

God wants us to practice on earth what we will do forever in eternity. We were made by God and for God, and until you figure that out, life isn't going to make sense. Life is a series of problems: Either you are in one now, you're just coming out of one, or you're getting ready to go into another one. The reason for this is that God is more interested in your character than your comfort. God is more interested in making your life holy than He is in making your life happy. We can be reasonably happy here on earth, but that's not the goal of life. The goal is to grow in character, in Christ-likeness.

This past year has been the greatest year of my life but also the toughest, with my wife, Kay, getting cancer. I used to think that life was hills and valleys - you go through a dark time, then you go to the mountaintop, back and forth. I don't believe that anymore. Rather than life being hills and valleys, I believe that it's kind of like two rails on a railroad track, and at all times you have something good and something bad in your life. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for.

You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems. If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness, "which is my problem, my issues, my pain." But one of the easiest ways to get rid of pain is to get your focus off yourself and onto God and others.

We discovered quickly that in spite of the prayers of hundreds of thousands of people, God was not going to heal Kay or make it easy for her. It has been very difficult for her, and yet God has strengthened her character, given her a ministry of helping other people, given her a testimony, drawn her closer to Him and to people.

You have to learn to deal with both the good and the bad of life. Actually, sometimes learning to deal with the good is harder. For instance, this past year, all of a sudden, when the book sold 15 million copies, it made me instantly very wealthy. It also brought a lot of notoriety that I had never had to deal with before. I don't think God gives you money or notoriety for your own ego or for you to live a life of ease.

So I began to ask God what He wanted me to do with this money, notoriety and influence. He gave me two different passages that helped me decide what to do, II Corinthians 9 and Psalm 72. First, in spite of all the money coming in, we would not change our lifestyle one bit. We made no major purchases. Second, about midway through last year, I stopped taking a salary from the church. Third, we set up foundations to fund an initiative we call The Peace Plan to plant churches, equip leaders, assist the poor, care for the sick, and educate the next generation. Fourth, I added up all that the church had paid me in the 24 years since I started the church, and I gave it all back. It was liberating to be able to serve God for free.

We need to ask ourselves: Am I going to live for possessions? Popularity? Am I going to be driven by pressures? Guilt? Bitterness? Materialism? Or am I going to be driven by God's purposes (for my life)?

When I get up in the morning, I sit on the side of my bed and say, God, if I don't get anything else done today, I want to know You more and love You better. God didn't put me on earth just to fulfill a to-do list. He's more interested in what I am than what I do. That's why we're called human beings, not human doings.

In the happy moments, PRAISE GOD. In the difficult moments, SEEK GOD. In the quiet moments, WORSHIP GOD. In the painful moments, TRUST GOD. And, in every moment, THANK GOD.

Skin cancer is "no big deal" UNTIL...

Skin cancer is "no big deal" UNTIL your Dad dies as a result of it, just ask Carol, OR your 22 year old nephew is diagnosed with stage 4 Melanoma skin cancer and it kills him at only 23 years old, just ask Cathy, OR it kills your dear friend who's in his 30's "with a lot of life before him," just ask Scotti or Brad, who's friend died a few years ago as a result of Melanoma skin cancer.

Over 50% of adults think that skin cancer is "no big deal"; Kevin & I fell into that category UNTIL at 39 years old "I", someone's Daughter, Granddaughter, Wife, Mother, Sister, Niece, Aunt and Friend, was diagnosed with Clark's level 2 MALIGNANT MELANOMA Skin Cancer!

Please do not let this DEADLY CANCER "hit home" before taking heed of this WARNING!

Prevention &/or EARLY DETECTION can SAVE your life OR one of your loved one's life!

"How" my cancer was detected

Kevin and I had heard of skin cancer, but we didn't know anything about it.  As I said in my initial post, over 50% of adults think that skin cancer is "no big deal" and we fell into that group.

HOW COULD WE BE SO NAIVE?!!!  WHY didn't we know about the seriousness of Melanoma skin cancer?  WHY, WHY, WHY?  Had we turned a deaf ear to it OR is it not common knowledge?

Melanoma skin cancer is life threatening IF it is not caught early; EARLY DETECTION is critical, thus my desire to create an awareness regarding this deadly disease!

Over the last year I had noticed an ugly "freckle" on my inner right calf, but I didn't know to be alarmed by it.  I was more concerned about the sun damage on my chest, so I had considered going to a dermatologist for cosmetic reasons; I had even scheduled 2 appointments that I canceled because it wasn't a priority to me.

Skin cancer had crossed my mind, but again, I didn't think it was "a big deal."  From what I could tell, the "ugly freckle" wasn't hurting me and the few "dry spots" on my chest and upper back weren't adversely affecting me either, so I felt it was a luxury rather than a necessity to visit a dermatologist; I didn't feel any sense of urgency whatsoever.

Sophia, our 2nd daughter, may have very well saved my life!  When I was pregnant with Sophia, I had a pyrogenic granduloma to appear on the side of my nose; because it was on my face, I had to have it removed by a plastic surgeon.

While examining my face, my plastic surgeon "happened" to look down at my leg and said, "I don't like what I see on your leg, we need to get that cut out immediately!" and within 48 hours she cut my "ugly freckle" out and sent it to pathology.

I still didn't think a thing about it!  I actually thought, "Here we go!"  We've heard those stories about people getting addicted to plastic surgery, haven't we?  She had removed the pyrogenic granduloma from the side of my nose and I had her remove 2 other moles that were on my face and now this place on my leg, again, I was thinking, "Oh brother!"  That's how serious I took it!

Come to find out, the "ugly freckle" on my leg was MALIGNANT MELANOMA, which is an invasive type of cancer; if not detected early, it can be deadly!

My cancer was "miraculously" detected just in the nick of time!  It takes my breath away to think that I was ONLY weeks or months away from being given a possible death sentence!

This is serious business folks!  I beg you to ACT UPON this WARNING!  EARLY DETECTION can SAVE YOUR LIFE; please click the following link and join me in spreading the word for the purpose of saving lives!

Melanoma Skin Cancer; The Day We Found Out!

Last Monday, January 24th, 2011, I received a phone call at 8am from my Doctor's office and was told that my Doctor needed to speak with me as soon as possible; at noon that same day Kevin and I were told that I have Clark's level 2 Melanoma Skin Cancer with a Breslow thickness of 0.29.

Statistics show that over 50% of adults think that skin cancer is "no big deal" and we fell into that group UNTIL we learned that Melanoma Skin Cancer, unlike basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma,  is the most serious and deadly form of skin cancer because it's an invasive type of cancer, which means that it can spread throughout your body IF it is not detected in it's earliest stages.

"My God, my God, how could this be?  Please spare my life, Lord Jesus!  I'll be okay, Lord, but please, Lord, spare my life for the sake of Hannah & Sophia & Kevin and my Mom & Dad;" my heart ached for those who would survive me, more than it ached for myself, because I knew IF this deadly disease killed me I would end up in Paradise walking on the Streets of Gold because as a BELIEVER in JESUS CHRIST I have the promise of Eternal Life.

Thankfully, my cancer had not spread throughout my body; had weeks or months passed before it's detection, it could have spread and my chances of survival would have diminished greatly.

Last Thursday, January 27th, I underwent surgical removal ("excision") of the melanoma; surgery at this stage usually cures the disease.

I'm sharing my story because I want lives to be saved as a result of this WARNING!  Please heed this warning and take it very seriously and please share it with others.

The survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the epidermis, is about 99 percent.34 The survival rate falls to 15 percent for those with advanced disease.3

My life has been spared and I am very thankful.  From this day forward, my prayer is that the Lord will work through my life and BLESS others.

Please stay tuned for further posts regarding "how" my melanoma was detected and life changing lessons I have learned as a result of this experience.
